Company first aiders – duties, training, and equipment
What is an occupational first aider allowed to do?
Compared to a standard first aider, the more extensively trained occupational first aider is responsible for providing advanced first aid. In addition to basic measures, they are also skilled in the use and operation of equipment such as resuscitation bags, suction pumps and oxygen therapy devices.
The occupational first aider is the first point of contact for medical emergencies in commercial settings. In addition to providing emergency care, they may also be involved in workplace health management and entrusted with maintaining on-site emergency equipment.
When do you need an occupational first aider?
The decision to appoint an occupational first aider depends not only on the number of employees but also on the frequency of accidents. In establishments with more than 1,500 employees, their presence is not just recommended but mandatory in accordance with Section 27 of the DGUV.
On large construction sites, where accidents occur more frequently, the need for several occupational first aiders becomes evident. In addition to designated first aiders, they ensure comprehensive medical care in emergency situations.
