What exactly is DIN 13157 for?
DIN 13157 defines the requirements for “small” first aid kits that must be available in various locations such as workplaces, construction sites or educational institutions. It ensures that proper first aid can be provided in the event of an accident.

How often should I check my DIN 13157 first aid kit?
As part of first-aid equipment in accordance with DIN 13157, it is essential to regularly check the contents of first aid kits for completeness and up-to-date items, especially in workplaces. There is no specific requirement for this; however, an inspection should take place at least every six months. In the event of use or if items have been opened, it is not strictly necessary to replace the entire contents. Individual components can also be replenished as needed. However, if several items have been used, it is often practical to use a complete DIN 13157 refill kit. This saves costs and ensures that the first aid kit is always ready for use.
What changed in 2021 regarding the DIN 13157 first aid kit?
DIN 13157 was last updated and revised in 2021. Four moist wipes and two face masks in accordance with DIN EN 14683 were added. In addition, the quantities of certain plasters were increased:
| Quick wound dressing 10 x 6 cm |
12 pieces (previously 8)
|
| Fingertip dressing 5 x 4 cm | 6 pieces (previously 4) |
| Finger dressing 12 x 2 cm | 6 pieces (previously 4) |
| Plaster strips 7.2 x 1.9 cm | 6 pieces (previously 4) |
| Plaster strips 7.2 x 2.5 cm | 12 pieces (previously 8) |
So are first aid kits that are older than 2021 invalid? Not exactly! DIN 13157 is a standard, not a law. In general, the application of standards is voluntary. Standards are not legally binding, which distinguishes them from laws. However, all DIN 13157 first aid kits manufactured after 2021 are up to date, including our product range.
How many first aid kits do I need?
In accordance with Section 25 (2) of DGUV Regulation 1, every company is required to provide sufficient first-aid materials. The number and type of first aid kits required depend on the size of the company and the industry. For example, in administrative and commercial businesses such as an office with up to 50 employees, one small first aid kit in accordance with DIN 13157 is sufficient. For companies with 51 or more employees, larger first aid kits in accordance with DIN 13169 are required. Here is an overview:
In field service roles, car first aid kits (DIN 13164) can also serve as small first aid kits. Alternatively, a DIN 13157 first aid kit is also a permitted option.
Note: Two small DIN 13157 first aid kits can replace one large DIN 13169 first aid kit.

Where must first aid kits be positioned?
The positioning of workplace first aid kits is of crucial importance. They must not only be clearly visible and easily recognisable, but also freely accessible. Labelling is carried out using the rescue sign (D-E003) – a white cross on a green background. The maximum distance from permanent workstations to the nearest first aid kit should be 100 metres and no more than one floor away.
Conclusion
A DIN 13157 first aid kit is more than just a requirement – it is a comprehensive measure to ensure effective first aid. With the right equipment and proper placement, companies can provide fast and effective first aid in an emergency. Care should be taken to ensure that first aid kits are always up to date, so that you are fully prepared in an emergency and can safeguard the safety of employees.
